MILEY'S VMAS HAIR STYLIST TELLS ALL

Miley's album isn't the only thing from the VMA's that
you can score for free.

There's also a step-by-step
tutorial on how to get her out-of-control ponytail,
thanks to celebrity hair guru Gregory Russell, who also
revealed some juicy on-set details—like the fact that
Miley began her VMAs hair prep 10 hours (!) before
the show actually began.

"We started our day at 11 A.M.," Russell confirmed via
e-mail, saying that the early prep was in part because
of all Miley's quick changes.

His first steps: laying out
all of Miley's hair accessories, tools, and grooming
products to ensure no beauty malfunctions would
happen during the show. (Wardrobe malfunctions
were obviously a given, but that's another story....

Russell followed Miley through her red carpet
appearance and ended up at a secret location:

"[During
the show] I was in her onstage dressing room, waiting
for [Miley]. We had to swap accessories and switch up
her hair for a few of the changes, but it was so fun."

Russell worked with Miley's longtime stylist, Simone
Harouche, to make sure Miley's hair accessories
(e.g., the giant crystal globs of glory) matched her
clothes: "We all collaborated on the looks and every
detail together with Miley and the design houses,"
including Versace and House of Holland. And the
actual headpieces? "They took hours to make! I used
some of the custom jewels that [the design houses] sent
with her looks.

There was a lot of [hair] whipping [in
her choreography], and I needed to make sure it stayed
in place, so I secured her headpieces with a lot of pins
and hair combs."

Planning an epic night of your own? Here are Russell's
steps for a Miley-approved ponytail:

1. Start with wet hair. Apply a generous blob of
hair gel and use a comb to get a sleek and clean base
for the twisted-up ponytail.

2. Comb all the hair up toward the crown as tight and
flat as possible. Lock the ponytail in place with
1-2 bungee ponytail bands to secure tightly.

3. Use a diffuser to dry the gel base to completion
before styling the ponytail.

4. Prep the wet (ponytail) hair with a texturizing balm
to amp up the volume. Then blow out the hair using a
flat brush.

5. Take 2-3" sections of the hair and apply a pearl-
size amount of TIGI Bed Head Hard to Get Texturizing
Paste and run it through the entire section from
ponytail band to ends.

6. Split that section in half and twist it twice around
itself, then use a comb to tease the twist and lock.
Repeat this technique through the ends.

7. Next, apply a pearl-size amount of TIGI Bed Head
Manipulator Matte and rub back and forth, then down
the twist to tighten it and give a matte texture.

8. Once all the the ponytail hair is twisted, spray TIGI
Bed Head Hard Head Hairspray down the twists for
hold.

9. To finish, embellish the base of the ponytail with a
hair accessory.
